Yes it is officially back on. I put my official offer back in. The sellers are going to pay for the basement to have a drainage system installed. The well guy is coming out tomorrow to look over the water system. So far, we only have what the inspector pointed out. So the proper well guy will tell us more. Depending on what the results of that are, I might ask for a price decrease as well.
But right now, this looks like it’s going to happen and I’m excited.
I’m also very scared. The basement repairs require jackhammering the floor. What if the cabin falls down? Do they jackhammer the entire floor or only parts of it? Why wouldn’t they just add a subfloor? I don’t know anything about basements and we didn’t have a subfloor in the house growing up. So yes, I’m just talking out of my butt!
So time to update the money spent for the cabin. I should probably make a page for it and then just update it as I go instead of it spread across a bunch of different posts. I’ll do that another time.
The inspection cost $593.25. I got the $8000.00 back from my previous deposit. I had left out a service fee of $60.00 for the wire transfer. This time I took a bank draft down the street instead of paying that fee. And this time I’ve paid $11,000 down.
So my out of pocket as of right now is: $8060.00 + 593.35 – 8000.00 + 11000.00 = $11,653.35. And a tank of gas.
Spent some time today after work learning about composting. There’s more for me to learn but I think one of the first things I’m going to set up is a composting area. Just one black bin for now. I am not sure how long it will even take me to fill it since it’s just me alone. But since I’ll have to take my trash to the dump myself, I’m not going to want to go very often so I’ll burn, recycle, compost what I can to minimize the trash. My biggest trash is going to be the kittie litter and the ashes from the pellet stove. While I could, potentially, compost both, I don’t think I really want to bother.
You can compost kittie litter if they are using a paper or wood litter. The kittie litter needs to be composted separately from the rest and left to sit for 2 full years before use. Then, it shouldn’t be used on plants you are going to consume. So flower gardens only. Totally not worth the trouble, in my opinion.
Ash is okay provided it doesn’t have any additives in it and you don’t use too much. So I could compost some but not all. I’ll probably do this.
I’m pretty much settled on this being my cabin. Unless the well stuff fails spectacularly, it’s gonna be mine! I feel a bit sad about disappointing my mom. I know it isn’t what she wanted me to buy. And maybe she will end up being right in the end. Maybe something better would come in a few months or a year. This is what I want and I don’t feel like I’m compromising much at all. It’s not perfect but I love that it’s not perfect.
I’m excited to go on this adventure! I’m scared of the cost. I know I can afford it but it’s gonna take all of my savings plus a bit on the credit card (like I have to buy a stove).
I even know what my first projects will be:
- Set up composting area
- Clear brush to make new walkway to burn barrel
- Rake gravel from old driveway away from the cabin
- Build porch steps
- Replace basement stairs
In the spring, I’ll try to get a couple of fruit trees planted. My mom wants to help me put in a couple of flower gardens with flowers that come up every year. I’d like to start a small vegetable garden too. I figure I should keep my spending down for the first year so I can rebuild my savings so I will mostly do outside yard work. This will be good for my physical health for sure!
If I’m getting ahead of myself, I don’t really care. It’s mine unless I back out.
